TRACY EDWARDS MBE

Tracy shot to fame in 1990 when she skippered the first all-female crew to sail around the world when Maiden raced in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race. She had battled male prejudices to get Maiden to the start line, but nine months later Maiden had won two legs and come second overall – the best result for a British boat since 1977 and still unbeaten today. Tracy was awarded an MBE and Royal Jordanian Air Force ‘wings’ from King Hussein, Maiden’s benefactor. She went on to lead many more record-breaking campaigns before restoring Maiden in 2018 and managing The Maiden Factor, with the boat taking on a five year world tour working with and supporting communities across the globe to enable girls into education and empower them to remain throughout their teenage years. Tracy has documented her story in two remarkable books, Maiden (1990) and Living Every Second (2001). Her third book, Maiden Rises, is due for publication in 2020.
